A giant step backward: Fellows Friday with Nitin Rao, who speaks out on India’s recriminalizing of homosexuality

Listening hard, for that voice of reason.

In a major setback last week for the LGBT community, an Indian Supreme Court ruling upheld Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code — a 153-year-old law criminalizing gay sex. This act overturned a 2009 Delhi High Court ruling that this should not apply to consensual acts and, essentially, recriminalized homosexuality. While the Indian government filed a petition to the Supreme Court asking it to review its decision just today, it felt like the perfect time to talk to entrepreneur Nitin Rao, a 2009 TED Fellow from India. While he now lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area, he tells the TED Blog about the general cultural attitudes about homosexuality in India, how this ruling affects him personally, and how people are responding to the move.

The Absence….

Memories of Bali
Memories of Bali

I haven’t posted in over 10 months! Terrible on my part. After my travels over SE Asia for a month earlier on in the year, I got extremely busy…

I started a new degree at the University of Western Sydney as soon as I got back in February and I got a little lost in the daily motions of getting used to a new University, teaching new students and of course planning new travels!

I’ve almost finished my first year of my Master of Teaching degree and I have to say that it has to have been one of the most challenging things that I have ever done. But, I feel like it was something that I had to do considering where I am headed career wise.

In travel news, my travel partner and I are heading to New Zealand from the 3rd to the 10th of December. We are exploring the North Island on this trip, landing in Auckland and plan to drive around for the time that we are there!

Would love to get any advice on traveling in NZ from those more experienced than I. Considering how crazy this year has been for me. I feel like I am overdue for an overseas trip!

One week countdown!

Seven long days till I take off to Bali!! The excitement and anticipation is well and truly building. I have a million things to do before I go which is annoying, but it needs to get done soon, or there is no trip!!

Flights, hotels and tours are all booked. The only problem that remains is money exchange. Because we (as in my sister and I) are going to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, we need to take 5 different currencies and we are on the hunt for the BEST exchange rate that we can find in Sydney! Any suggestions??Imageven

The first of many!

Good day!

This blog has been a long time coming. This should have happened years ago, but… better late than never! With my month long trip coming up (starting on December 10th), I have decided to FINALLY start my own blog. I will mostly be posting about my travels, but I will also be talking about many of my other loves along the way! So, stay tuned and I hope to have more coming your way very soon!
